Boro Marbles with Josh Mazet
 |
|
Class
Description
This will be a 2 day class focused on lampworked borosilicate marbles.
The teacher, Josh Mazet, is a marble specialist and he'll share all his tips
and tricks he has learned over the years
This class is laid out in a progressive schedule with each demo building on
the previous, cumulating in the poplar "Vortex" marble. On day one we'll
start with an emphasis on proper forming, shaping, and using a graphite
marble mold. From there we'll move on to color application, and the correct
use of dicro and successfully using it in your marbles. Josh is Coating By
Sandberg's main lampwork instructor, and you can be confident you will be
leaving with the ability to add some sparkle and bling to your lampworking
projects. Day one will conclude with students making their own "galaxy
marbles" that feature big bursts of dicro within the marble.
Day 2 is focused on the Vortex marble. These marbles are recognized by
their optical illusion of being deeper than would seem possible. The day
will offer multiple demo's in the vortex, with students given the
opportunity for several attempts of their own.
Josh has a BFA in ceramics from the University of Oregon, and is a
certified boro color instructor. During the course of the class Josh will
discuss color and flame chemistry, heat management, torch settings, safety,
body positioning, and the resources available to glass workers. This
discussion will go beyond simply the "what" to do, but the "why" so
students have full understanding of process of, the reasons behind the
decisions of someone who has made over 5,000 torchworked marbles.

Powderology with Linda Steider
 |
|
Class
Description
Explore the possibilities of personal expression
with this underused form of glass in a hands on, fun, experimental
atmosphere. Working with small components, students practice a variety of
techniques unique to glass powders, including color blending & shading for
‘painting’, sgrafitto, combing & feathering, line work, resists, templates,
faux sandblasting, and how to pull out oversifted powder. Experiment with
Glass Glow™, and mica, as well as dichroic and irid glass, learning how they
interact with and relate to glass powders. Students will also discover how
to ‘correct’ a problem, after it’s been fired. Design & color issues will be
discussed and practiced. Students will take home a set of samples to
remember the techniques allowing them to easily replicate this work in their
own studio. Some samples may have to be picked up the following morning.
Day 1:
Introductions Explanation of glass, tools;
safety issues. Brief discussion on elements of design. Different effects of
powders & design elements. Bend stringer for use with texture studies. Work
with a base glass, irid up/ irid down; clear capped, light, dark . Note how
color works according to what it’s next to. (powder wafers if desired)
Students make a series of samples - color & design studies based on my
examples and their personal imagery or ideas. We usually do some creative
‘jump start’ exercises if we need an afternoon ‘spark’.
Day 2:
Critique of day 1’s samples/ studies. Review of
any problem areas; understanding our results & how we achieved them. Any
additional quick tests in table top kiln, based on previous day’s results.
Continue with a series of study to further develop an idea and/or move on to
a larger project in which the studies can now be employed i.e. paintings or
surface design with glass. Students work more on their own, are encouraged
to develop and express more specific imagery from the previous day’s
explorations, while noting and utilizing design elements and color relevant
to their vision.
This work is picked up the following morning.

Crossover Torchworking for Fusers
 |
|
Class
Description
Have you
tried to make realistic scenes in fusing and are just frustrated with all
that cutting and grinding of the flat glass? Are you a torch worker looking
for another direction? Then this is the class for you! In this intermediate
class we will learn how to sculpt flowers, leaves, stems and tendrils out of
“soft” glass. We make components on a torch out of vibrant Bullseye Glass
Rod colors to fuse into a raised design on a flat panel of glass. We start
with flower petals and buds, then simple leaves, stems and tendrils. After
lunch we will make butterflies and dragonflies. Learn to blend, shade and
make realistic components that make fusing come alive!
We will also
cover the firing schedule for this piece and a full handout to repeat
results at home!
